Newnan is the outlier on this list geographically — about 35 to 40 minutes southwest of Atlanta via I-85, which makes the daily commute longer than most of the suburbs here. It's also a genuinely different kind of town: a historic "City of Homes" downtown anchored by the 1904 Coweta County Courthouse, with Ashley Park handling most of the shopping and dining just off I-85.

That longer highway commute is where a fuel-efficient sedan earns its keep. A Toyota Camry or Honda Accord — either the standard or hybrid trim — makes the I-85 drive cheaper and less tiring than a larger SUV would, while still having room for a Coweta County school run or an Ashley Park shopping trip on the weekend.

As the seat of Gwinnett County, Lawrenceville mixes a historic downtown square with modern draws like Coolray Field, home of the Gwinnett Stripers, and the Sugarloaf Parkway corridor near Sugarloaf Mills. GA-400 (exits 13 through 17) is the main commuter spine, and Sawnee Mountain Preserve adds another 11 miles of hiking trails for weekend use.
