What Documents Do You Need to Sell a Car in Georgia?

By Nalley Automotive

Getting your paperwork lined up before you sell your car saves you a lot of hassle later. In Georgia, a handful of documents really matter, and having them ready means the sale goes quicker and smoother. Here's what you'll need, whether you're selling to someone privately or bringing it to us at Nalley Cars.

The Title Is the Big One

The title is the most important piece of paper here. It proves the car is yours, and the sale isn't official until it changes hands.

If your car's paid off, the title should be in your name. Can't find it? You'll need to get a replacement from the Georgia Department of Revenue before you sell. And if you still owe on the car, your lender is holding the title until the loan's paid. We get into how all that works in our guide on selling a car with an existing loan in Georgia.

A Valid Photo ID

Sounds obvious, but people forget it all the time. You'll need your Georgia driver's license or state ID to show you're the person named on the title. Bring it no matter who's buying.

The Bill of Sale

A bill of sale lays out the deal: who sold the car, who bought it, the price, the date, and the VIN. Georgia has an official form for it (the T-7), but a clear written record does the job too.

This one's for your protection. Once the car's sold, it shows you're no longer responsible for it. Hang onto a copy for yourself.

Odometer Reading

For most cars, you have to write down the mileage at the time of sale. Newer titles have a spot for it right on the paper, so it usually gets handled when you sign the title over. It's a federal rule, so don't skip it.

Lien Release

If you financed the car at some point and it's since paid off, make sure you've got a lien release from your old lender. That paper shows the loan's settled and the lender no longer has any claim on the car. Without it, the buyer can't get a clean title. And if you're trading in a car you're still paying on, we take care of the payoff for you, which we cover in our post on trading in a car with a loan still owed.

Emissions Certificate

If you're in one of the metro Atlanta counties that require emissions testing, you might need a valid emissions certificate to finish the transfer. Worth checking before you list the car so nothing catches you off guard. Our rundown on Georgia emissions testing covers who needs it and who doesn't.

Don't Forget Your Tag and Insurance

After the sale, take your license plate back to your county tag office or move it to another car you own. Then cancel or switch your insurance so you're not paying for a car you don't have anymore. Small steps, but they save you money and trouble.
