The minivan: the quiet winner for carpool duty

Nobody's first pick, everybody's best pick. Sliding doors are the whole argument — in a Buckhead parking deck or a school pickup line, kids get in and out without dinging the SUV parked next to you. A Toyota Sienna returns 36 mpg combined as a standard hybrid, which is remarkable for something that seats eight. The Honda Odyssey counters with a cavernous 140.7 cu. ft. of max cargo space, and the Kia Carnival splits the difference with SUV-adjacent styling and a hybrid option.

Best for: three-plus kids, daily carpools, anyone who'd rather have space than swagger.
Watch out: roughly 3,500 lbs. of towing means a small boat, not a big one, and no real off-road ability.

The full-size SUV: for towing and terrible weather

If you're pulling a boat to Lake Lanier or a camper to the North Georgia mountains, this is the only honest answer. A Toyota Sequoia tows up to 9,010 lbs. — nearly triple a minivan. Higher seating helps in Atlanta's flash-flood downpours, and the road presence is real. Want the same footprint with a luxury interior? Look at the INFINITI QX80.

The trade-off is also real: 20 mpg combined and nearly 80 inches wide, which makes older Midtown decks and narrow Virginia-Highland streets genuinely stressful. Third-row cargo drops to 22.3 cu. ft. — less than a compact SUV's trunk.

Best for: towing, big road trips, drivers who want maximum presence.
Watch out: fuel costs and parking. Both add up fast.

The compact SUV: the smart default

For most Atlanta drivers — couples, small families, commuters — this is the right call. A RAV4 Hybrid hits 41 mpg combined; a CR-V Hybrid does 40 mpg front-drive, 37 mpg with AWD. At 181 inches, it slots into any deck space in the city. And with the rear seats up, a RAV4 holds 37.8 cu. ft. — more than either three-row option does behind its last row. The Hyundai Tucson is worth a look too, often at a lower entry price.

Best for: commuters, one- or two-kid families, first-time SUV buyers.
Watch out: five seats is a hard ceiling. There's no third row when the in-laws visit.
