Demystifying Georgia’s TAVT: How Trading In Saves You Thousands on Vehicle Taxes

By Nalley Automotive

When shopping for a new or used vehicle in Metro Atlanta, calculating your total out-of-pocket cost involves more than just the sticker price and interest rate. In Georgia, every vehicle title transfer is subject to the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT).

Understanding how TAVT is calculated—and how trading in your current vehicle directly lowers your tax burden under Georgia law—can save you thousands of dollars at purchase.

1. What is Georgia Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT)?

Georgia replaced traditional sales tax and annual "birthday" ad valorem taxes on vehicles with a one-time TAVT paid when the vehicle is titled.

  • Standard TAVT Rate: The state TAVT rate is 6.6% to 7.0% of the vehicle’s fair market value (FMV) or agreed selling price.
  • When It’s Paid: TAVT is collected at the time of titling by your local county tag office (e.g., Fulton, Gwinnett, Cobb, DeKalb). When you purchase from a dealership, the dealer collects and remits TAVT on your behalf.

2. The Dealer Trade-In Tax Advantage (O.C.G.A. § 48-5C-1)

Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 48-5C-1), when you trade in a vehicle to a licensed motor vehicle dealership during a purchase, the agreed trade-in value is deducted from the new vehicle's price before TAVT is applied.

Crucially, this tax credit is NOT available in private party sales. If you sell your car privately to a buyer and then buy another car from a dealer or individual, you pay full TAVT on the entire purchase price of your next vehicle without any trade-in offset.

Math Example: Private Sale vs. Dealer Trade-In Savings

Assuming a buyer purchases a $45,000 SUV at a 7.0% TAVT rate with a car worth $20,000:

  • Scenario A (Private Sale): You sell your old car privately for $20,000. You buy the $45,000 SUV. TAVT is calculated on $45,000 ($45,000 × 7.0%). Total TAVT Owed: $3,150.
  • Scenario B (Nalley Dealer Trade-In): You trade in your car at Nalley for $20,000 towards the $45,000 SUV. TAVT is calculated only on the net difference of $25,000 ($25,000 × 7.0%). Total TAVT Owed: $1,750.
  • Net Tax Savings: Trading in at the dealership saves $1,400 in cash taxes upfront!
