Ask most shoppers what a sensible family car looks like today and they describe a compact SUV. It's become the default. Read that last row twice. The Camry is 12.5 inches longer than the RAV4. The single most common reason people give for skipping a sedan — "it's easier to park something smaller" — is backwards. Ride and handling. A lower center of gravity means less body roll on 400's sweeping curves and more composure in an emergency lane change. Sedans just feel more planted.
Price. Roughly $2,300 less to start on comparable trims, and typically a bit less to insure.
Efficiency. Camry, Accord Hybrid, and Civic Hybrid (49 mpg combined) are the most efficient non-plug-in options on the lot. Nothing SUV-shaped touches them.
Best for: solo commuters, couples, anyone with a long daily drive who values how a car feels over how much it holds.
Where the compact SUV genuinely wins
Cargo, and it isn't close. 37.8 cu. ft. behind the rear seats versus a 15.1 cu. ft. trunk — and 70.4 cu. ft. with the seats down. A trunk has a fixed opening; a hatch swallows a stroller, a bike, or a Home Depot run.
Ground clearance. 8.1 inches versus 5.4. Atlanta gets sudden, heavy summer downpours and streets that pond fast. Nearly three extra inches of clearance is genuine peace of mind on a flooded underpass or an unpaved lake road.
Visibility and getting in. Higher seating helps you see over traffic, and the step-in height is easier on knees, car seats, and anyone loading a toddler.
Demand. Compact SUVs are the most-shopped segment in the country, which tends to help them at trade-in time. Ask your specialist for a current value on the specific models you're weighing.
Best for: families, dog owners, weekend Lake Lanier or North Georgia trips, anyone who hauls gear more than occasionally.
The honest verdict
Choose the compact SUV if you regularly carry things — kids, gear, dogs, big-box hauls — or if flooded streets and steep driveways are part of your routine. For most Atlanta households, this is still the right answer, which is why it's the default.
Choose the sedan if you mostly drive alone, want the lowest total cost, and actually enjoy driving. You'll spend less, use less fuel, and park in spots the SUV crowd drives past. If you've been talked out of a sedan on the assumption it's less practical, look again — a Camry at 46 mpg with available AWD is a lot of car for under $30,000.
